Robin Kroener's Photographic Journal: Bethells Beach, West Coast Auckland

We spent an entire morning wandering the Karekare and Bethells Beaches. These black sand beaches (although the sand's blackness isn't as obvious in the glistening sunshine) are located on the west coast of Auckland. Unless you're driving, these areas are not easily accessible. We were unable to find any public transportation servicing this western area of the city. However, the Visitor Centre recommended this group which offers "made to order" tours of the beaches, bush and rainforest on the west coast. Stan (www.takeahike.co.nz) custom designed our black sand beach tour. Our tour included hotel pickup and return, coffee break and a lunch courtesy of Stan, in addition to his commentary on the beaches and other points of interest along the way. Unhurried, we leisurely waded and strolled along the beaches taking pictures and enjoying both the brisk breezes and warm, dazzling sunshine.
